EUGENE, Ore. -- The motive in a workplace shooting in Eugene is reportedly the ribbing one employee took from a co-worker after the predicted May 21 rapture failed to occur.

The mother of the victim says her son told her that Dale O'Callaghan took it personally when he was teased about his belief that he would be taken to heaven by the return of Jesus Christ. Andrews' mother, Robin O'Brien, says she knew O'Callaghan was religious and she assumed the shooting occurred because of the presumed ribbing at work.

The suspect's father, however, is disputing the rapture claim. Ronald O'Callaghan said his son is not among those who believed the rapture was going to occur on May 21.

The Register-Guard reports a police affidavit says that Andrews told investigators O'Callaghan called him "one of those Satanic people" after the shooting.

O'Callaghan is accused of shooting Jerry Andrews on Friday at LHM Hydraulics, where they worked. Andrews suffered a fractured shoulder. The 39-year-old O'Callaghan is held in the Lane County Jail on an assault charge.
