SHADY COVE, Ore. -- Last weekend's massive landslide may not be as disastrous to Chinook salmon as first feared.
Department of Fish and Wildlife officials say the dirt has settled, but is not creating a solid layer on top of the salmon spawning nests, which would have buried and likely killed all the eggs. Now, crews are surveying the riverbed and determining if sediment made its way between the gravel cracks and to the eggs.
Officials say historically only half of the salmon have spawned by this time of the season, and the other half that has not yet, will likely not be affected the slide.
