MEDFORD, Ore. -- At Hawthorne Park, several organizers offered a free Thanksgiving meal.
A group of community members say they don't belong to a church or any specific organization. They just got together to give out a Thanksgiving meal to the homeless. It's not just today that they're doing this. Organizers say they host free meals every Friday and Sunday. They say it gets expensive but continue to do it anyway.
Cafe Dejeuner also prepared and served free Thanksgiving meals to anyone hungry. Today Cafe Dejeuner hosted its third annual free Thanksgiving meal where anyone in the community could come in for food. It took cooks about ten hours to make everything from the turkey to mashed potatoes. The owner says the idea came about when the recession hit and a lot of people were struggling to get by.
Cafe Dejeuner's Thanksgiving dinner has been a success with over 150 people stopped by to eat. The event lasted from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. today and the owner says they'll do it again next year.
