JACKSON COUNTY,Ore.--The Rogue Valley International Airport averages approximately 1,400 passengers a day but Sunday airport officials expected an additional 400 would make their way through their doors.
The Rogue Valley International Airport said this holiday weekend is one of their busiest.
But some passengers ran into trouble trying to get home at their scheduled time. The early morning fog made for a number of delays.
At least one plane coming in from Portland circled around the airport a number of times waiting for the fog to clear before running so low on gas they had to return to PDX.
While that flight couldn't land, others including a bay area flight were stuck on the ground.
"We went to Kansas City for about a week and had some delays in San Francisco with the weather," said Stefanie Simmons.
A portion of the millions of drivers on the road this weekend dealt with fog. For the majority it was a worth trade to have clear roads, especially with the extra traffic.
"We are on our way back to Folsom California and traffic has been easy today," said Roger Waldow.
Oregon State police said the number of drivers in the state nearly triple during the holiday weekend.
Car travel remains the dominant mode of transportation. Approximately 38 million Americans took to the roadways this holiday weekend.
