CENTRAL POINT, Ore. -- A drive-by shooting in Central Point sends two people to the hospital early this morning and a high-speed chase by police ends with one suspect dead.
It all began around 4 a.m. this morning near Beall Lane in Central Point, and ended with that car crash eight miles away on old stage road. Police are now trying to find out what led up to that shooting.
Two people were sitting in a car on Beall Lane when they were shot at. Glass and blood were still visible on the street Tuesday evening. 22-year-old Erik Dorey had a gunshot wound to the mouth and he was flown to Portland for treatment. 19-year-old Jennifer Knutson suffered minor injuries.
The three suspects in another car took off down Beall Lane. Oregon state police saw the car speeding by and began chasing them. The chase lasted about eight miles to Old Stage Road, when the car lost control and rolled down a 40-foot embankment. One suspect was thrown from the car and died, the other two were taken to an area hospital.
The Jackson County Sheriff's Office is now trying to piece together what started the shooting in the first place. The two surviving suspects were transported to an area hospital; one has since been discharged and arrested.
